Just 12 km. south of Colombo along the road to Galle lies Mount
Lavinia, the famous beach resort of Sri Lanka. It is an immediate city
suburb and the beach lying alongside a wind swept headland jutting into
the waters of the Indian Ocean. The Governor's House built in 1805 by
Sir Thomas Maitland, now forms part of the famous Mount Lavinia Hotel.
The name Lavinia was derived from a secret love affair between a British
Governor and a local damsel who used to meet at the holiday house of the
Governor which stood on the spot where the Mt. Lavinia Hotel is now
located.

The clean beach with its soft sand is like a magnet attracting numerous
tourists. However, people are advised not to venture out into the sea
because of the strong under currents. There and some great beachside
restaurants offering Sri Lankan delicacies. It offers a perfect beach
holiday.
Mt. Lavinia Hotel:
The palatial colonial building that houses the Mt. Lavinia Hotel
certainly deserves a visit. It still echoes the splendour of the British
lifestyle.

Due to its close proximity to Colombo Mount Lavinia is easily
accessible to the tourists. Tourist cabs and yellow top taxis can be
hired from Colombo.
